Relative clauses
A)  Different clauses
“The man who became king came from France.”
Where is the relative clause? What is its antecedent? THE MAN

Compare with:
“The man, who became king, came from France”.

Which difference(s) do you notice?
The first one is necessary to understand who you are talking about.
On the contrary, the second one only adds some information which is not necessary (we mentioned the man before…) It is a non-defining clause.

B)  Different pronouns
1)   Subject or object ?

1.   He is the man who believed the throne was his _ S_ _
2.   The man whom they killed was Harold._ _O_ _ _
3.   The language Æ  they spoke was difficult._ _O _ _ _
4.   The article which I read was on the blog._ _ _O _ _

2)   which antecedent ?
Complete with : who, whom, which, that ,  ,
a)    If the pronouns are subjects :




human antecedent


Ex: the man __WHO/ THAT__ crossed the Channel was called William.

EX2: the king,__WHO__ spoke French, had many castles built. (non defining clause)


non-human antecedent


EX: Many words _WHICH/ THAT_ sound French were probably invented at that time.
EX2: The article, __WHICH__, is on the blog, deals with the two languages.


b)   if the pronouns are objects :


human antecedent
The student  who/ whom/ / that
you heard before is Jules.
NB : The student, who/ whom  you heard before, is Jules. (it is a non-defining clause )

non-human antecedent
The text  that/ which/ you read earlier deals with William…
The document, which you read this morning, deals with William. (non-defining)
